What to Expect – Working with Family Resistance in Play Therapy

Resistance in therapy is a certainty that all therapists experience. In turn, therapists can feel stuck or even frustrated. Resistance prevents clients fulling engaging in the therapeutic process.

Including families in play therapy increases possibility of resistance in play therapy. This is because of the complex dynamics families bring into session.

The Working with Family Resistance in Play Therapy workshop teaches therapists all about resistance: how to identify resistance, how to engage in the dance of resistance, and how to work with resistant families and clients in play therapy.

In this workshop, attendees learn to identify symptoms of resistance, and practice play therapy techniques to help clients decrease resistance and join in the therapeutic relationship. Let’s work together to reduce the impact client resistance has on the services we provide.

Working with Family Resistance in Play Therapy Learning Objectives

After attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify at least three symptoms demonstrated by clients/families that are experiencing resistance in play therapy.
  2. State three play therapy techniques used to decrease client/family resistance in play therapy.

  4. Identify specific ways in which family resistance influences the approach to to play therapy with clients.
