Challenging Behaviors 101: Workshop Details

Challenging behaviors of youth can be hard for adults. Adults do their best to respond to these behaviors but may feel discouraged or defeated.

Children don’t have the same tools as adults to communicate. Therefore, children and youth use behaviors as communication. Behaviors can help adults understand emotions, thoughts, needs, and struggles.

This workshop will teach participants how a child’s past experiences in life and within relationships contribute to the shaping of mistaken beliefs. Further, participants will learn what role underlying mistaken beliefs play in a child’s sometimes challenging behaviors. Additionally, this workshop will provide learning on the primary goals of misbehavior and share supportive and effective ways to respond.

Audience: Designed for clinical, direct care, and educational professionals or students. Parents/caregivers and support people may also benefit.

Challenging Behaviors 101: Workshop Objectives

  1. Participants will understand how experiences shape a child’s internal belief system.
  2. Participants will learn about the connection between beliefs and challenging behaviors.
  3. Participants will learn strategies for developing response and intervention to challenging behaviors.
